The phone interview can be tricky, though, because you cant make eye contact or observe the interviewers body language.

  1. Use a land line. Carve out a special time and place for the call, and you'll have a better connection for your phone interview
  2. Remove distractions and background noise, such as barking dogs, sound of kids playing, ringing cellphones and doorbells
  3. Keep notes during the interview and write things down as the interviewer talks. Have questions of your own ready to ask
  4. Speak clearly
  5. Let him or her finish speaking before you respond
  6. Smile!  When you respond, you'll come across as more energetic and positive
  7. Follow up. After the phone interview, send a note thanking the interviewer and reiterating your key points

This gives you time to decide if the fit is right. It also allows the organization to monitor your success in the role, evaluate your skills and abilities, and determine your compatibility with the corporate culture. If a full-time job opens up, you'll be well positioned to land it since you and the employer are already familiar with each other. If the organization is impressed with your performance as a temp, and they have the budget, they may even create a new full-time position for you

Just as technology enables you to research employers easily, hiring managers can use the Web to learn about you. Thanks to personal websites, blogs and social media, hiring managers can dig up a wealth of information with just a few mouse clicks.

Best Practices

  1. Do a thorough self–search. The first step in managing your digital footprint is becoming aware of what you are up against. Run searches for information about you that is available for potential employers to see
  2. Take action. If you find information that you fear will undermine your professional credibility, try to have the content removed. Also remove tags from photos of you
  3. In cases where damaging references appear to be permanent online fixtures, be ready to discuss the topic in a job interview
  4. Remove questionable content you have posted on your own personal websites.  If you maintain a website or blog, closely review every piece of information you have presented about yourself to make sure your digital footprint is as clean as possible
